A Recycling Option For Downtown KC Residents

Deramus Recycling Center in Kansas City

Kansas City does not offer curbside recycling to residential buildings with six units or more, which makes recycling difficult for many residents. But the Deramus Recycling Center is a tidy, convenient option for those living downtown with a car and the willingness to make the short trip.

The containers at Deramus are monitored and protected from the weather which leads to a higher value of reclaimed materials than some of the bins downtown. Deramus also features a collection container for scrap metal that you cannot find at most recycling centers.

But the best part of the trip is checking out the sites along the East Bottoms. Check out some of the landmarks below:

ASB Bridge in Kansas CityThe Arlington-Swift-Burlington (ASB) Bridge was built in 1911. Cars traveled on the upper deck until the Heart of America Bridge opened in 1987.

Kit Bond Bridge in Kansas City
The new Kit Bond Bridge opened in 2007.

Sears Outlet Store in Kansas CityCaption not necessary.

Violia Coal PlantThe Veolia Energy coal plant - built in 1903 - supplies steam for heat and chilled water for air conditioning to approximately 60 commercial buildings downtown. Many Kansas Citians would like to see it shut down - for good reasons, it's pumping out a lot of pollutants into a densely populated area - but it's a great old building.

I would like to take some stuff here, but I don’t know where it is. Can you provide an address or coordinates that I can put in Google Maps?

Roundhouse ExchangeWe're excited to announce that our stockroom and repair center is now open. While Roundhouse Exchange is an online store, we know there are occasionally those times when it's nice to see someone face to face. Repairs, returns, or replacement parts are easily handled in person instead of dealing with the hassles of shipping it off to the great unknown. And for Kansas City residents, orders placed online can be picked up here to avoid shipping charges.

Deffenbaugh Landfill

Ever wondered where your trash goes after it gets picked up in Kansas City? More than likely, it goes to the Deffenbaugh Landfill in Johnson County. Deffenbaugh was created in 1967 and has grown to be one of the largest active landfills in the Midwest. Located about 20 miles west of downtown Kansas City, it is easy to spot as you cross the Kansas River while traveling southbound on I-435.
